OAKLAND, Calif. (June 19, 2007) – ABSTRACT: This paper presents results of an evaluation of Project Independence (PI), a shallow rent subsidy program with services coordination support for very low income people with HIV or AIDS who live in Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay Area. By providing a small rental subsidy to eligible individuals and their families who are already stably housed, the philosophy of the program is to prevent homelessness before it starts.

Launch of Plan to End Homelessness in Alameda County

OAKLAND, Calif. (February 14, 2007) – Today, Alameda County mayors and supervisors were joined by Philip F. Mangano, Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, to launch EveryOne Home, a comprehensive countywide plan to end chronic homelessness within 10 years and significantly reduce housing crises for vulnerable populations in Alameda County over 15 years.

Monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for a disabled individual are $836 in Alameda County while the Fair Market Rent is $874 for a studio and $1,055 for a one-bedroom apartment. If SSI represents an individual's sole source of income, $251 in monthly rent would be considered affordable.
